How To Activate Windows Defender Firewall

  • Launch the Control Panel window followed by the System and Security window. 
  • Select Windows Defender Firewall -> Customize Settings -> Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
  • Turn on the Windows Firewall feature for Domain, Private, and Public Network section.

Allow Apps To Communicate Through Windows Defender Firewall

  • Launch the Windows Defender Security Center software.
  • Select the Firewall & Network Protection option on the left panel of the screen.

  • Select the Change button and then select the app or feature that you do not want to allow.
  • Click Private or Public -> OK.

How To Disable Windows Defender Firewall


  • Go to the Windows Defender Security Center window.
  • Select the Virus & threat protection option on the left panel of the screen.
  • Turn off the switch beside the Real-time protection option to disable the Windows Firewall feature on your system.


  • Navigate to the SecurityHealthService option on the left panel and then select Start on the main panel.
  • Enter 4 in the Value Data field.
  • Likewise, go to the WinDefend, WdNisSvc, and MpsSvc option on the left panel and then change the value from 2 to 4.
  • Exit the Registry Editor window.


  • Navigate to the Run window.
  • Type ‘regedit’ without the quotes and then select the OK button at the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  • Go to the location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender location.
  • Right-click the Windows Defender option on the left panel of the screen and then click the Export option.
  • Fill the File Name field and then select the Save button.
  • Again, right-click the Windows Defender option and then click the Permissions option.
  • Select Advanced -> OK -> Change -> OK.
  • Enter Administrators in the ‘Enter the object name to select’ field and select OK.
  • Select ‘Replace owner on subcontainers and objects’ and then select the Apply button.
  • Select Administrators entry and click the Full Control checkbox in the Basic Permissions section.
  • Click the OK button thrice.
  • Select DisableAntiSpyware on the main panel of the screen and enter 1 in the Value Data field. Select OK after modification.
  • Select the DisableAntivirus option, type 1 in the Value Data bar, and click OK.

Windows Defender Firewall Can t Change Some Of Your Settings

Follow the guidelines below to troubleshoot this issue.  

  • First, make sure to turn on the Windows Firewall Services.
  • To open the Windows search engine, click the Cortana icon.
  • Enter Services in the search field and right-click the first result which has the same name.
  • Now, click the Run as administrator option.

  • Double-click the Windows Firewall Service to enable it.
  • From the Properties menu, go to the General tab and then change the startup type to Automatic.

  • Now, reboot the computer and check whether the Windows Firewall can't change some of the settings error is present.
  • If present, proceed with resetting the Windows Update Components.
  • First, right-click the Windows Start button.
  • Select Command Prompt from the available list.
  • Enter the following commands in the Command box.
  • etsh advfirewall reset; net start, mpsdrv, net start bfe
  • Hit Enter Now, exit the cmd window and then restart the computer.
  • Next, set the Background Intelligence Transfer Service.
  • Go to the Firewall Windows Services.
  • Search for the Background Intelligent Transfer Service option.
  • Make sure the feature is disabled and double-click on it.
  • Under Properties, launch the General tab and change the Start type as Manual.
  • Now, click the Start button and then apply these settings by saving them. Restart the System.
  • If the issue persists, block the third part antivirus and make sure to run the Security scan. Remove the corrupted files.
