How to Enable Windows Defender

Windows Defender is a software/program provided by Microsoft to search and get rid of spyware on your PC.

To enable Windows Defender, execute the following steps:

Procedure to turn on Windows Defender

  • Click the Start menu and then open Control Panel.
  • Go to Administrative Tools and choose Edit group policy. You will see the Local Group Policy Editor open.
  • Click open Computer Configuration.
  • Under Computer Configuration, choose Administrative Templates.
  • Select Windows Components.
  • Next, choose Windows Defender Antivirus. Beneath the folders of other settings, you will find Turn off Windows Defender Antivirus.
  • Click open Turn off Windows Defender Antivirus. Ensure Turn off Windows Defender Antivirus is Disabled or Not configured.

Procedure to turn on Real-time Protection

  • Click the Start menu and look for Windows Defender Security Center.
  • Choose Virus and threat protection settings. Make sure Real-time protection and Cloud-delivered protection are On.
Procedure to turn on Real-time Protection

Sometimes, these options might not appear. If this is the case, execute the steps given below:

  • Click the Start menu and then open Control Panel.
  • Go to Administrative Tools and choose Edit group policy. You will see that Local Group Policy Editor is opened.
  • Click open Computer Configuration.
  • Under Computer Configuration, choose Administrative Templates.
  • Select Windows Components.
  • Next, choose Windows Defender Security Center and then go to Virus and threat protection.
  • Go to the Virus and threat protection area setting. Make sure it is Disabled.

Procedure to update your Antivirus Definitions

  • Click the Start menu.
  • Look for Windows Defender Security Center.
  • Choose Protection updates.
  • Then select Check for updates. You have to complete this step so that you can be sure that your system is protected from virus attacks.
  • In case you are not able to find this option, execute the steps given under Procedure to turn on Real-time Protection.
